Chuma's Role

As a dedicated mentor and advocate for emerging HCI talent, I've had the privilege of guiding students from Walter Sisulu University to the semi-finals of the ACM CHI Student Design Competition, competing against teams from over 72 countries worldwide.. Over the past 16 years, I've worked closely with students from various countries, offering support and guidance as they navigated the challenges and opportunities of this prestigious competition. My mentorship has focused on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and effective communication skills. By providing personalized guidance and feedback, I've helped students develop innovative and impactful design projects that have earned them recognition on the international stage. I'm immensely proud of the achievements of the South African team, Chuma Makalima, Yolanda Gwala, Lutho Makasi, Anam Baza, and Andile Michael Lwanga, who showcased their exceptional talent and dedication at CHI 2023. Their success is a testament to the power of mentorship and the potential of African HCI researchers to make a significant impact on the global stage.
